May 18: Remembering the Battle of Las Piedras
Today's May 18, the anniversary of the Battle of Las Piedras, which sealed Artigas' victory for independence. "Clemencia para los vencidos!"
1811 was the year. BICENTENNIAL celebrations will occur in almost all Latin American countries during the next few years. Argentina began with a huge 200-year anniversity fiesta on May 25th. Uruguay's complicated process lasted from the Battle of Las Piedras until (July 18) 1830. August 25 (1825) is Independence Day. Prime national hero, Jose Artigas, was the protagonist (and memorable phrase-maker)during the first decade of the struggle, to 1820. Minnesota-Uruguay Partners will try to illuminate the long, complicated struggle.
